Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUB Lala is a beloved novel in Poland although it was only in the second half of the book that I really began to understand why There and of the narrative is given over to the author’s grandmother the eponymous Lala Polish for Dolly and I warmed to everyone concerned and could imagine wanting to re read episodes from the story just as one might want to hear stories from one’s own ageing relatives several timesIn the first half of the book it was obvious that this was a début by a clever young chap who’d read a lot of books and who had thought a lot about writing There was too much self conscious reflexive commentary on the writing process which reminded me of pieces of my own that I've started but didn’t finish That stuff can feel good to write but Lala showed me very clearly that it doesn’t suit every type of story Once Dehnel has got most of the meta stuff out of his system and the narrative brings the reader into longer periods of contact with his family and their histo

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBThis Polish book is now available in English so go knock yourself outI found a lot of my grandmother in Lala the author’s grandmother It was a way of talking about oneself that portrayed them as anything but a victim There was Nazi occupation and all other aspects of the tumultuous 20th century Polish history but never seemingly did they suffer The Nazis in my grandma’s stories and in Lala’s stories were scolded by strong women and apologetic for any transgressions It’s one way to deal with trauma probably the way I find most relatable Self mythologising to forget what hurts Just smile and carry on Nothing ever touched you and life has always been a ballLala’s life definitely was a ball and this book is her grandson’s tribute to it It’s a p

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBThis rather wonderful mixture of family history and invention was completed when Dehnal was 22 but does not read like a young man's book This is perhaps because the real inspiration was his grandmother the Lala of the title whose stories are at its heart The story spans five generations beginning with Lala's own grandparents in the late 19th century when the political map of Eastern Europe was very different It follows the family through all of the conflicts of the twentieth century and ends in the new Polan

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBI've just put down Lala and I have to say I'm in love with Dehnel's prose which manages to stir up layers of literature sedimented and often forgotten in the Polish language He is often accused of using archaic démodé vocabulary but I disagree his writing isn't at all that of a literary epigone it shows a great sensibility for the historical context although it's certainly not afraid of being idiosyncratic But what about the story? returnreturnLala is a curious form of autobiography in which the I of the narrator remains peripheral to the unfolding events and at the same time a very present story teller story reteller that consciously builds his narrative acutely aware of the context of the telling of each story of how stories may contradict themselves how they are forgotten throug

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBA couple of GR friends I trust raved about this one so I moved it up my TBR and am so very glad I did This fictionalized biography is translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd Jones The Lala of the title which translates to Dolly in Polish is the author's grandmother and the story captures her life from her birth after WW1 to the modern era during a very turbulent time in European history If you are lucky enough to have an older relative who talks about their past then you are already familiar with the flow of this book It is not a linear narrative people places and events all circle back on each other creatin

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBI have come to have a great love for polish authors and there works over the last few years They have a way of holding my attention from the very first page I think I have been very lucky in only coming across a couple of duds along the way When Lala came across my field of vision I jumped on the link to find out if it would be another to add to my enjoyment This is only the second I would class as contemporary fiction as the others have all been in some way or another crime fiction We get to pay witness to Lala's story as she narrates her life in the form of small story to her grandson I was amazed in the way in which Dehnel has crafted this fictional character He mages to lift her off the page and bring her into the real world She is warm and caring in a way I have seldom seen This is not say she is a pushover I would expect nothing less from this woman Her life has taken her on many adventures as she passed thro

Lala ePUB Ü Hardcover lala kindle, Lala PDF/EPUBA beautiful book and tribute to Jacek Dehnel’s grandmother Lala It reads like a memoir of her life in Poland including WW2 The writing is delightful light whimsical and poetic He captures Lala beautifully a charming woman happy strong willed with a sense of mischief A confusing number of characters it’s a creative memoir than fiction I’d love to know how true it is to her story why they chose to market it as ‘a novel’ But I forgave it because of the tone it’s like having tea with a poet his iconic grandmother She’s such a great character and I loved Dehnel’s respect and love for her and efforts to keep her stories alive poignant thoughts of the ephemeral nature of our lives It made me think of Teffi’s memoir and short stories Beautifully translated by Antonia Lloyd Jones
